What is a home measurement or floorplan service?

A measurement service is just what it sounds like: An appraiser measures the dimensions and square footage of the property, then draws a basic or highly detailed floorplan based on your needs. The appraiser's report and floorplan is a document that can be used to prove an accurate Gross Living Area (GLA), the total livable space, of your home. These services are helpful and sometimes necessary when challenging property taxes or selling a property.

How do home measurement services work?

During a home measurement service, a certified appraiser measures your property with a measuring tool — either a tape or laser measuring device. As they walk the house, they mark the layout of the rooms and other features, like closets, hallways, and pantries. They may sketch out the property. Then, the appraiser develops a report and a more detailed sketch showing the total square footage and the overall layout of the home. The final product is a document that can be used to prove certain details about your property — like the Gross Living Area (GLA) — on tax documents, property listings, and more.

When is a measurement or floorplan service required?
